The MSc Program in Agroecology and Rural Development (PPGADR) at the Center for Agrarian Sciences was created in 2006.

The course aims to introduce another perspective on food production, in addition to the evaluation of sustainable agroecosystems based on the concepts and tools used by the Agroecology, which incorporates the knowledges of Ecology, Agronomy, Economics and Sociology, and issues related to alternative strategies of rural development policies and prospects.

Since the 50’s the adoption worldwide of agricultural production model based on monocultures of genetically improved seeds and highly demanding in agrochemical inputs has provoked a series of social and environmental problems in the sector, as well as criticism of the nutritional quality of foods and its consequences for the health of consumers.

Currently, it is observed a growing need for professionals with interdisciplinary training to act in public, private and third sectors in activities related to sustainability of agroecosystems. It is seen as resulting from the action of the environmental and socio-economic factors, which are the basis for sustainable development.

In this sense, the MSc student should be able to integrate these different knowledges and skills through the use of theoretical and methodological tools and practices. These conditions are essential for interdisciplinary training within the objective of contributing to the development and consolidation of teaching, research and extension.

Therefore we intend to train professionals committed to the understanding and application of concepts and methods adopted by the Agroecology as fundamental dimensions of sustainable agriculture and endowed with an effective scientific and technical basis for an integrated and interdisciplinary nature in to the understanding of sustainable rural development.

Students should be able to produce and disseminate scientific knowledge and the development of agro-ecological management and will be qualified to consolidate and advance the knowledge available, directly contributing to the scientific level and indirectly at political, economic, social, cultural and ecological levels for deployment agroecological farming production.
